How to Sell Domains
Every method for selling domains, from marketplace listings to direct outreach.
The four main selling methods
Marketplace listings
List on Afternic, Sedo, and Dan.com. Afternic has GoDaddy integration which drives significant traffic. Set a buy-now price and wait for buyers to find you.
Direct outreach
Find companies that would benefit from your domain and email them. Higher effort but often higher prices. Works best for keyword domains with obvious buyers.
Domain brokers
For domains worth $5,000+, a broker can reach buyers you'd never find. They take 10–20% commission but often get significantly higher prices.
Auctions
GoDaddy Auctions and NameJet work well for domains with clear demand. Good for generating competitive bids and selling quickly.
Pricing strategy
Pricing is where most sellers go wrong. Too high and you wait forever. Too low and you leave money behind.
- Marketplace listings: Price at 3–5x your target. Buyers expect to negotiate.
- Direct outreach: Price closer to market value. You're approaching them, so be reasonable.
- "Make offer" pricing: Use when you're unsure. Lets buyers tell you what they'll pay.
- Auction reserve: Set at your minimum acceptable price, not your dream price.
Closing the sale safely
Always use escrow for domain sales. Escrow.com is the industry standard. Never transfer a domain before payment clears.
Safe transaction checklist
- ✓ Use Escrow.com or a marketplace's built-in escrow
- ✓ Confirm buyer identity before initiating transfer
- ✓ Wait for escrow confirmation before pushing the domain
- ✓ Keep records of all communications
- ✓ Get a signed purchase agreement for sales over $1,000
